The species Escherichia hermannii was originally described by Brenner et al. 1982. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 10 in 1983. In 2016, Hata et al. established Escherichia hermannii as the basonym of
Atlantibacter hermannii (Brenner et al. 1983) Hata et al. 2016
