The species Enterobacter cowanii was originally described by Inoue et al. 2000. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 82 in 2001. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2013, Brady et al. established Enterobacter cowanii as the basonym of
Kosakonia cowanii (Inoue et al. 2001) Brady et al. 2013
