The subspecies Erwinia carotovora betavasculorum was originally described by Thomson et al. 1981. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 13 in 1984. In 1998, Hauben et al. established Erwinia carotovora betavasculorum as the basonym of
Pectobacterium carotovorum betavasculorum (Thomson et al. 1984) Hauben et al. 1999
