Nomenclatural History

The genus Proteus was originally proposed by Hauser 1885. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Lautrop published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Hyun et al. in 2016.
