The species Salmonella typhimurium was originally described by Castellani and Chalmers 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Tindall et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Salmonella enterica enterica (Kauffmann and Edwards 1952) Le Minor and Popoff 1987
in 2005.
