Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Serratia marcescens marcescens was originally described and validly published by Ajithkumar et al. 2003. In 2003, Ajithkumar et al. reduced Bizio 1823 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies. Cho et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Ajithkumar et al. 2003 in 2020.

The valid publication of this subspecies occurred via Rule 40d upon valid publication of the first subspecies in the parent species.
