The species Serratia liquefaciens was originally described by Bascomb et al. 1971. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Grimont et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Serratia proteamaculans (Paine and Stansfield 1919) Grimont et al. 1978 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1978.
