The species Serratia marinorubra was originally described by ZoBell and Upham 1944. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Brenner established Serratia marinorubra as an earlier homotypic synonym of
Serratia rubidaea (Stapp 1940) Ewing et al. 1973 (Approved Lists 1980) pro synon. Serratia marinorubra ZoBell and Upham 1944 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1984.
