The species Shigella dysenteriae was originally described by Castellani and Chalmers 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 11 in 1954. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 26 in 1963.
