The subspecies Yersinia enterocolitica enterocolitica was originally described by Frederiksen 1964. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2000, Neubauer et al. reduced (Schleifstein and Coleman 1939) Frederiksen 1964 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
