The species Yersinia kristensenii was originally described by Bercovier et al. 1980. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 6 in 1981. In 2019, Cunningham et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Bercovier et al. 1981) Cunningham et al. 2019 .
