The species Natronobacterium magadii was originally described by Tindall et al. 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 15 in 1984. In 1997, Kamekura et al. established Natronobacterium magadii as the basonym of
Natrialba magadii (Tindall et al. 1984) Kamekura et al. 1997
