The species Desulfovibrio baarsii was originally described by Widdel 1980. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 7 in 1981. In 2005, Kuever et al. established Desulfovibrio baarsii as the basonym of
Desulfarculus baarsii (Widdel 1981) Kuever et al. 2006
.
