The species Desulfovibrio baculatus was originally described by Rozanova and Nazina 1976. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 15 in 1984. In 1988, Rozanova et al. established Desulfovibrio baculatus as the basonym of
Desulfomicrobium baculatum corrig. (Rozanova and Nazina 1984) Rozanova et al. 1994
