The species Desulfovibrio mexicanus was originally described by Hernandez-Eugenio et al. 2000. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 79 in 2001. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2020, Waite et al. established as the basonym of (Hernandez-Eugenio et al. 2001) Waite et al. 2020 .
