The species Desulfobacterium catecholicum was originally described by Szewzyk and Pfennig 1987. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 24 in 1988. In 2019, Galushko and Kuever established Desulfobacterium catecholicum as the basonym of
Desulfocastanea catecholica (Szewzyk and Pfennig 1988) Galushko and Kuever 2021
