The species Desulfobacterium cetonicum was originally described by Galushko and Rozanova 1991. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 49 in 1994. In 2005, Kuever et al. established Desulfobacterium cetonicum as the basonym of
Desulfosarcina cetonica corrig. (Galushko and Rozanova 1994) Kuever et al. 2006
