The species Desulfobacterium macestii was originally described by Gogotova and Vainstein 1989. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 31 in 1989. In 2003, Hippe et al. established as the basonym of (Gogotova and Vainstein 1989) Hippe et al. 2003 .
