The species Desulfobacterium phenolicum was originally described by Bak and Widdel 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 24 in 1988. In 2001, Kuever et al. established Desulfobacterium phenolicum as the basonym of
Desulfobacula phenolica (Bak and Widdel 1988) Kuever et al. 2001
