The species Desulfobulbus mediterraneus was originally described by Sass et al. 2002. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 87 in 2002. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2020, Galushko and Kuever established as the basonym of (Sass et al. 2002) Galushko and Kuever 2021 .
