The species Trichlorobacter thiogenes was originally described by De Wever et al. 2000. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 78 in 2001. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2007, Nevin et al. established Trichlorobacter thiogenes as the basonym of
Geobacter thiogenes (De Wever et al. 2001) Nevin et al. 2007
