The species Myxococcus virescens was originally described by Thaxter 1892. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Lang et al. published an emended description of this species in 2008. Lang et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Yamanaka et al. 1990 in 2008.
