The species Campylobacter coli was originally described by Véron and Chatelain 1973. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Vandamme et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Campylobacter hyoilei Alderton et al. 1995
in 1997.
