The subspecies Campylobacter jejuni jejuni was originally described by Véron and Chatelain 1973. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1988, Steele and Owen reduced (Jones et al. 1931) Véron and Chatelain 1973 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
