The species Campylobacter mustelae was originally described and validly published by Fox et al. 1989. In 1989, Goodwin et al. established Campylobacter mustelae as the basonym of
Helicobacter mustelae (Fox et al. 1988) Goodwin et al. 1989
. Fox et al. elevated the subspecies
Campylobacter pylori mustelae Fox et al. 1988
to the rank of species to form this name in 1989.
