The genus Arcobacter was originally proposed and validly published by Vandamme et al. 1991. Vandamme et al. published an emended description of this genus in 1992. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Sasi-Jyothsna et al. in 2013 and Pérez-Cataluña et al. in 2018.
