The species Dehalospirillum multivorans was originally described by Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 88 in 2002. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2003, Luijten et al. established Dehalospirillum multivorans as the basonym of
Sulfurospirillum multivorans (Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002) Luijten et al. 2003
