The species Sulfurospirillum multivorans was originally described and validly published by Luijten et al. 2003. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. Luijten et al. formed this name in 2003 by placing the species
Dehalospirillum multivorans Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002
into the genus Sulfurospirillum Schumacher et al. 1993 emend. Luijten et al. 2003.
