Nomenclatural History
The genus Clostridium was originally proposed by Prazmowski 1880. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Smith and Hobbs published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Lawson and Rainey in 2016. Rainey et al. transferred the members of Duda et al. 1996 into this genus in 2009.

Tindall 2016 states that the emendation by Lawson and Rainey 2016 should not be applied to this taxon because it was based on the inclusion of a name that was Not Validly Published at the time of the emendation.
