This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. The species Clostridium arcticum was originally described by Jordan and McNicol 1979. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1986 the name was revived by Cato et al..
