The species Clostridium durum was originally described by Smith and Cato 1974. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1994, Collins et al. established Clostridium durum as the basonym of
Paenibacillus durus corrig. (Smith and Cato 1974) Collins et al. 1994 emend. Guella et al. 2019
