The species Clostridium hathewayi was originally described by Steer et al. 2001. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 85 in 2002. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established Clostridium hathewayi as the basonym of
Lachnoclostridium hathewayi (Steer et al. 2002) Yutin and Galperin 2013
. In 2014, Kaur et al. established Clostridium hathewayi as the basonym of
Hungatella hathewayi (Steer et al. 2002) Kaur et al. 2014
