The species Clostridium lentoputrescens was originally described by Hartsell and Rettger 1934. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Nakamura et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Clostridium cochlearium (Douglas et al. 1919) Bergey et al. 1923 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1979.
