The species Clostridium polysaccharolyticum was originally described by Van Gylswyk et al. 1980. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 10 in 1983. Van Gylswyk et al. formed this name in 1980 by placing the species
Fusobacterium polysaccharolyticum van Gylswyk 1981
into the genus Clostridium Prazmowski 1880 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Lawson and Rainey 2016. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established Clostridium polysaccharolyticum as the basonym of
Lachnoclostridium polysaccharolyticum (van Gylswyk 1981) Yutin and Galperin 2013
