The species Clostridium propionicum was originally described by Cardon and Barker 1946. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established Clostridium propionicum as the basonym of
Tyzzerella propionica (Cardon and Barker 1946) Yutin and Galperin 2013
. In 2017, Ueki et al. established Clostridium propionicum as the basonym of
Anaerotignum propionicum (Cardon and Barker 1946) Ueki et al. 2017
