The species Clostridium purinilyticum was originally described and validly published by Dürre et al. 1981. Cato et al. corrected this name from Clostridium purinolyticum (sic) to Clostridium purinilyticum . In 2017, Poehlein et al. established Clostridium purinilyticum as the basonym of
Gottschalkia purinilytica (Dürre et al. 1981) Poehlein et al. 2017
