The species Clostridium thermolacticum was originally described by Le Ruyet et al. 1985. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. In 2001, Fardeau et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Clostridium stercorarium thermolacticum (Le Ruyet et al. 1988) Fardeau et al. 2001
