The species Clostridium xylanovorans was originally described by Mechichi et al. 1999. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 72 in 2000. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established Clostridium xylanovorans as the basonym of
Lachnoclostridium xylanovorans (Mechichi et al. 2000) Yutin and Galperin 2013
. In 2016, Ueki et al. established Clostridium xylanovorans as the basonym of
Anaerocolumna xylanovorans (Mechichi et al. 2000) Ueki et al. 2016
