Proper Form
| Sarcina Goodsir 1842 emend. Canale-Parola 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) |
Nomenclatural History
|
The genus Sarcina was originally proposed by Goodsir 1842. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Canale-Parola published an emended description of this genus in 1974.
The unification of this genus into Clostridium contravenes Rule 51b (2) of the Code because Sarcina has priority over Clostridium. The current taxonomic opinion is that these two genera are not synonymous.
