The species Ruminococcus hydrogenotrophicus was originally described by Bernalier et al. 1996. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 61 in 1997. In 2008, Liu et al. established Ruminococcus hydrogenotrophicus as the basonym of
Blautia hydrogenotrophica (Bernalier et al. 1997) Liu et al. 2008
