The species Ruminococcus palustris was originally described by Zhilina et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 60 in 1997. In 2002, Liu et al. established Ruminococcus palustris as the basonym of
Trichococcus palustris (Zhilina et al. 1997) Liu et al. 2002
