The species Peptostreptococcus barnesae was originally described by Schiefer-Ullrich and Andreesen 1985. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 20 in 1986. In 2001, Ezaki et al. established Peptostreptococcus barnesae as the basonym of
Gallicola barnesae (Schiefer-Ullrich and Andreesen 1986) Ezaki et al. 2001
