The subspecies Desulfotomaculum thermobenzoicum thermosyntrophicum was originally described and validly published by Plugge et al. 2002. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2018, Watanabe et al. established as the basonym of (Plugge et al. 2002) Watanabe et al. 2018 .
