The species Veillonella ratti was originally described and validly published by Mays et al. 1982. Kraatz and Taras published an emended description of this species in 2008. Mays et al. elevated the subspecies
Veillonella alcalescens ratti Rogosa 1965 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of species to form this name in 1982.
