The species Thermoanaerobacter finnii was originally described by Schmid et al. 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 22 in 1986. In 1995, Cayol et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Schmid et al. 1986) Cayol et al. 1995 .
