The species Thermoanaerobium acetigenum was originally described by Nielsen et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 49 in 1994. In 2006, Onyenwoke et al. established as the basonym of (Nielsen et al. 1994) Onyenwoke et al. 2006 .
