The species Thermoanaerobium acetigenum was originally described by Nielsen et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 49 in 1994. In 2006, Onyenwoke et al. established Thermoanaerobium acetigenum as the basonym of
Caldicellulosiruptor acetigenus (Nielsen et al. 1994) Onyenwoke et al. 2006
