The species Halanaerobium acetethylicum was originally described by Rainey et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 55 in 1995. Oren corrected this name from (sic) to . Rainey et al. formed this name in 1995 by placing the species Rengpipat et al. 1989 into the genus corrig. Zeikus et al. 1984 emend. Rainey et al. 1995 (sic) Zeikus et al. 1984 emend. Rainey et al. 1995.
