The species Halanaerobacter lacunarum was originally described by Rainey et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 55 in 1995. Oren corrected this name from (sic) to . Rainey et al. formed this name in 1995 by placing the species Zhilina et al. 1992 into the genus corrig. Liaw and Mah 1996 emend. Mouné et al. 1999 (sic) Liaw and Mah 1996 emend. Mouné et al. 1999.
