The species Thermotoga subterranea was originally described by Jeanthon et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 76 in 2000. In 2014, Bhandari and Gupta established Thermotoga subterranea as the basonym of
Pseudothermotoga subterranea (Jeanthon et al. 2000) Bhandari and Gupta 2014
