The species Thermotoga subterranea was originally described by Jeanthon et al. 1995. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 76 in 2000. In 2014, Bhandari and Gupta established as the basonym of (Jeanthon et al. 2000) Bhandari and Gupta 2014 .
