The species Mycoplasma haemocanis was originally described and validly published by Messick et al. 2002. Messick et al. formed this name in 2002 by placing the species
Haemobartonella canis (ex Kikuth 1928) Kreier and Ristic 1984
into the genus Mycoplasma Nowak 1929 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Gupta et al. 2018. In 2018, Gupta et al. established Mycoplasma haemocanis as the basonym of
Eperythrozoon canis (Kreier and Ristic 1984) Gupta et al. 2018
.
